Tigers vs Burford Exhibition Game

 May 2, 2002 6:30 p.m. Waterworks Park
Reported by Marg Szoke

The Tigers were an even match against the Burford team for much of the first half with several dominating runs that allowed Brendon Ulysse and Cory Suppa shots on goal. The Tigers scored their first goal on a cross by Tommy Nagorski that was finished by Taylor Smith. Captain Mike Ion contributed an impenetrable defense along with goalkeeper, Charles Vickers, to shut out the Burford team until halftime.

The second half was off to a promising start with a good heading attempt by Brendon Ulysse. The half proved to be very physical and the Burford team scored tying the game 1-1.

Kris Harrison made an excellent push towards the goal that was repelled by the opposing defense.

A goal for the Tigers seemed certain on an awesome chip shot by Taylor Smith that needed only a few inches more to be successful.

In the final minutes of the game, the Burford team was awarded a penalty and scored with no answer by the Tigers.

The game ended 2-1 for Burford.  Despite the frigid temperatures both teams played a strong and energetic game.

Game # 2569
Brantford Tigers Win Home Opener

Brantford’s Under 13 Rep team sponsored by KNY Architect Inc.and Brant Stereo this year, hosted Waterloo here in Brantford and won their first game of the season. The Tigers created a defensive wall, made by Mike Ion and James Ferguson and kept the Waterloo forwards from making any attempt for goal scoring minimal.
The team showed a lot of control with excellent passing, moving the ball up the field, looking like a mid-season team. A new member to the team, Jake Simmons, was instrumental in keeping the ball in the centre allowing Rory McDonnell and Kris Harrison excellent scoring opportunities.
McDonnell scored the Tigers first goal on a blocked clear, kicked by the goalie. Rory made no mistake so close to the net and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Starting the 2nd half strong, McDonnell scored on a solid kick and then began to set up numerous scoring plays. Ferguson continued with a strong second half at midfield, taking control, challenging Waterloo everywhere and making numerous tackles.
Goal keeper William Pugsley stopped an indirect kick but Waterloo finally scored from a penalty kick that Pugsley nearly deflected. Left forward Jamie Szoke helped the Tiger cause taking the ball out of the danger zone late in the second half. After Ion made a few more diving saves on defence, the Tigers were able to keep their first victory in their claws. The team played an excellent game so early in the season and all players appeared to be hungry for a good start.

Playing to a Tie with Milton

 Game #2574

KNY Architect Inc /Brant Stereo Tigers Win Again

The Tigers came to Milton remembering their missed opportunities from last season and wanted to make sure this year. The midfield and forwards showed good passing to keep control in the first half but it appeared to be a deja vu as many near scoring attempts occurred in the first half. At the other end, goal keeper Will Pugsley made nearly a dozen saves to keep the score close.
Centre forward Kris Harrison started the onslaught with a shot careening off the top cross bar early in the first half. Dillon Vickers kept the pressure on from right forward but Milton scored at 17 minutes to give them a 1-0 lead. Harrison missed on a excellent break he created from his quickness through the middle at 21:00 then Pugsley made two diving saves, one point blank, robbing Milton of a sure goal. Harrison fought through the defence again and nearly scored before the referee signalled the end to the first half.
Starting the second half, the Tigers put constant pressure on Milton’s defence with an excellent cross from Vickers to Jamie Szoke who just missed the net with a head attempt. Vickers was able to cross several more from the right but no one was able to find net. Finally after a series of shots, Dan Namisniak, a new Tiger on the team, finally put one over the goal keeper to tie the game at 1-1. Milton came right back 5 minutes later to go ahead 2-1. Late in the
half Rory McDonnell, crossed to Szoke and he made no mistake with this one and headed it past the goal keeper for the tying goal with only minutes left to play .

Away At Hillsburg/Erin
by: Gary
Game # 2577
June 7

Erin scored within the first ten minutes or the game while Brantford, not use to playing on a hard field with short grass, appeared to struggle with their offense. Passes were longer or harder than ususal and few connected. At the twenty minute mark Hillsburg/Erin scored their second goal.

Will Pugsley played a strong first half, keeping the score close by blocking 3 quick, close shots in a row.

Brendon Ulysse chipped in a goal for the Tigers at 38 minutes from a pass from Kris Harrison.

Starting the 2nd half, Will again was a defensive standout, saving Brantford from a larger deficit but at 56 minutes, Hillsburg/ Erin scored their 3rd goal.

Jake Simmons played a strong defensive game along with Adam Zareski, Mike Ion and Nick Kellner. The defensive wall for Hillsburg/Erin was just too big for Brantford and their offensive line finished Brantford off with two more goals giving them the victory with a 5-1 score over

Away At St. Catharines
by: Gary
Game # 2588
June 21

Brantford played in St. Catharines and found that they can play away just as good as they can at home. The defence again set the stage for the type of game the Tigers were going to play. Jake Simmons, Mike Ion and Adam Zareski kept the ball out of our end and gave a lot of support to keeper Will . Even though St. Catharines did score first , Brantford continued to put pressure on the St. Kitts goalkeeper. Just before half, Cory was able to put a low, well placed shot in the far left corner.

With the score tied 1-1 Brantford took to the field for the second half and began to put some offensive pressure on the St. Catharines defence. Kris Harrison, Rory MacDonnell and Jamie Szoke had good looks at the net but couldn't put it by the keeper.

Keeper Pugsley had to stave off a last minute charge and make three saves in a row to keep their tie. Some of the saves were from point blank. The game ended in a tie but St. Catharines appears to be another team that Brantford can stay with. The season seems to be looking bright for these Tigers and they're hungry for a good record.
